Starting this month through the Fall, us lucky folks living in the Upper East Side will have three new gluten-free places to check out.
Even though this is a huge victory for our taste buds, I’m also really happy that we are getting more local gluten-free options in this area. I live in the Upper East Side and I must say the gluten-free options are not as bountiful as one would hope. Also, just last month, Pips Gluten-Free Cakery closed its doors for good which was a sad loss for the gluten-free community. I wish these three gluten-free restaurants / bakeries a long life in the Upper East Side!
Noglu Restaurant and Epicerie
Location: 1266 Madison Ave., between 90th and 91st
Projected Opening: Fall 2015
As some of you may know, I had the the amazing opportunity to dine at Noglu in Paris this past September (3 times!) I never thought I would have another opportunity to dine there again unless I traveled back to Paris – which I’m totally for. But now us New Yorkers can have our cake and eat it too with our own little piece of gluten-free France in New York City.
Here’s just a snapshot of the food I ate at Noglu:
Not only was the restaurant 100% gluten-free but the people were some of the friendliest I’ve ever experienced when dining out and, of course, the food was délicieux! Also, the gluten-free beer was the best I’ve ever had. I really hope Noglu is able to offer some amazing European gluten-free beers since this is still an area that is laggard in the United States.
By The Way Bakery
Location: 1236 Lexington Ave. near East 84th Street
Opening: Early October 2015
I love this bakery. I had the opportunity and pleasure to meet the owner, Helene Godin – high-powered attorney turned baker….cool huh? Not only is Helene sweet but her desserts are mouthwatering good too. I’m so happy she is expanding her presence in New York City with a shop on the east side.
Treat House
Location: 1566 Second Ave., between 81st and 82nd
Just opened!
As a kid, who didn’t love rice crispy treats? I could easily destroy an entire box to myself. It’s been years since I’ve had the pleasure of eating an ooey gooey rice crispy treat. Thankfully, the Treat House is making its way across the park to the Upper East Side, opening a second location.
The Treat House specializes in turning rice cereal and marshmallow treats into delicious desserts with unique flavors and toppings for all ages. It appears that many of the treats will be gluten-free, dairy-free and kosher but not all so make sure to inform the staff that you are looking for a gluten-free option.
Make sure to check out these spots and support your local gluten-free restaurants / bakeries!
Till we eat again…
